Malin Kundang

Malin Kundang is a story from West Sumatra that already became a famous legenda in Indonesia. This story tells about a rebellious man who didn’t acknowledge his own mother.

Long time ago there was a child named Malin who came from very poor family that lived on a small village. Since Malin were child he only lived with her mom. He was the one and only child in his family and his father had left him long time before he was born. Malin was a kindhearted person. He always took care of his mom. 

After he finished his school, Malin helped her mom to search for some woods and sold them to the city across their village to retain some earnings.

As time goes by, Malin grew up and changed to become more mature person. He felt pity toward his mom because her mother had work hard to fulfill malin’s need and school expense. So he thinked a way to get more money instead of staying to sell woods. He planned to work and stay in the city across their living place reply his mom’s merit. His mom disagreed with Malin’s idea at the beginning but Malin kept trying to say that his mom deserved more than she owned.

Finally Malin’s mom allowed her one and only son to leave and then Malin started to sail with small boat. Before he started to sail he promised that he woud come back after he succsess and then took his mom to live together with him in the city. Malin’s mom then fulfilled by great hopes about her son.

Year by year had passed. Indeed, Malin had became successful person. He owned many tradeships. He was not only rich, but also had a beautiful wife. One day, Malin’s wife wonder about malin’s hometown.She asked malin to bring her to Malin’s hometown. Malin could not deny her wife’s request so finally they went back to Malin’s hometown.

After Malin’s ship stopped in his hometown, everyone near the beach became startled. Years after Malin left his hometown, he never gave any news. But now he had back with a bigship, a beautiful wife and many comrades. Rumour about Malin now had been spreaded in his village. Malin’s mom who heard the news about malin’s arrival then hurriedly went to the beach. After few years she finally met his lovely son. When malin’s mom about to hugged Malin, Malin’s wife asked to malin “Is she your mom,Malin?”. Malin who felt ashamed of his poor mom then pushed his own mom away from his side. “She isn’t my mom! Who the hell is this poor and pity granny. Soldier,make this old granny out of my ship! I don’t even recognize her!”.

How sad and mad Malin’s mom felt right after she heard what just his son said. Malin’s mom was filled with a lot of tears. But her own son still pretended to didn’t know him .Malin then quickly prepared to get back to his he had fulfilled his wife request because he didn’t have any purposes on his hometown anymore.

Malin’s mother who had been thrown by her own son then enranged her anger.She cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn to be a stone but still, Malin just passed away through his mom. Not long time after Malin and the others were sailing, a huge wave came and then hit his ship. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship and their ship got crashed in a moment. It’s too late for Malin to feel regret. The wave brang Malin to an edge of an island.Then Malin body’s slightly changed into a stone.
